Ray Clements, once a heavy drinker and cocaine user, has transformed his life after being diagnosed with a rare genetic condition that led to blindness. Embracing a new path, he has excelled as a blind baseball player, winning multiple medals for Great Britain and achieving a historic home run. Ray credits losing his sight with saving his life, stating that he now sees more clearly than ever despite his blindness.
Having overcome addiction, Ray now focuses on positive activities and is launching a charity called Finding the Solution, dedicated to promoting goalball in mainstream schools for visually impaired individuals. Since becoming clean and sober in February 2022, Ray has assisted 15 individuals on their own sobriety journeys, which, in turn, helps him maintain his commitment to a healthy lifestyle. His guide dog, Garson, has been a loyal companion, providing crucial support along his journey.
Ray’s health journey took a significant turn on his 49th birthday when he woke up with deteriorating vision. Following his brother’s advice, he sought medical help, eventually receiving a diagnosis of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), resulting in blindness. This diagnosis prompted Ray to address his alcohol dependency, leading to his sobriety and a new perspective on life.
Despite the challenges of being blind, Ray finds solace and motivation in his guide dog, Garson, who helps him navigate daily obstacles. As he approaches his four-year sobriety milestone, Ray looks forward to a future of continued sobriety with the support of Garson by his side.
