McDonald’s customers are expressing frustration following the announcement of changes to the fast-food giant’s loyalty program. Beginning March 17, the number of points required to redeem free items through MyMcDonald’s Rewards will increase. Currently, customers need 5,500 points for popular items like a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets. However, this will be raised to 6,500 points. Points are earned at a rate of 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.

The point thresholds for items such as a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will also rise, from 2,500 points to 3,500 points. Additionally, to redeem a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, customers will now need 5,000 points, up from 4,000 points.

In response to concerns raised on social media, one fan expressed dissatisfaction, while another inquired about the start date of the changes. A McDonald’s spokesperson explained that the adjustments in the loyalty scheme are a response to increasing food and supply costs. They highlighted that while the points required for redemption have gone up, new fan-favorite items such as Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and a Sausage Sandwich have been added to provide more choices for customers.

The loyalty program changes coincide with the launch of McDonald’s new menu in the UK, which includes innovative offerings like the Surf N’ Turf burger featuring two beef patties, a crispy white fish fillet patty, and a variety of toppings. Other new menu items include the Chicken Cheeseburger, Espresso Milkshake, and Chilli Cheese Bites.
