A mother was arrested for leaving her 10-month-old daughter in a hot car while she was working at a fast-food restaurant. Hannah Faith Cormier informed the police that she accidentally left her baby in the vehicle during her shift. The child was found in critical condition and despite efforts by hospital staff, she tragically passed away.
The Jefferson Davis Parish District Attorney’s Office in Louisiana announced that Cormier received a five-year prison sentence with hard labor and no probation, parole, or suspension of sentence due to the child being under 10 years old. She was charged with negligent homicide in October 2024 and pleaded no contest.
Negligent homicide, defined as the killing of a human being by criminal negligence, was the charge under Louisiana law. District Attorney Lauren Heinen expressed the community’s sorrow over the loss of the baby and emphasized the importance of protecting all children.
Statistics from the US National Safety Council revealed that on average, 37 children under 15 die each year from heatstroke after being left in a vehicle. In 2018 and 2019, a record number of 53 children died under similar circumstances.
