NASA’s upcoming lunar astronauts have commenced a strict quarantine period, indicating that their groundbreaking mission is nearing its launch in just a few weeks. The crew, set to travel further from Earth than any previous humans, initiated a health stabilization regimen on Friday as preparations intensify for a potential mid-February liftoff. NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, are undergoing isolation in Houston before relocating to Kennedy Space Center in Florida approximately six days before the launch. They will reside in specialized crew quarters until departure. Throughout the quarantine, they are allowed limited interactions with family and colleagues who adhere to strict health protocols, while also following guidelines such as wearing masks and maintaining physical distancing. Meanwhile, extensive mission simulations and medical evaluations are being conducted as engineers ready the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft for the upcoming flight. The mission, known as Artemis II, is anticipated to span around 10 days, taking the crew on an impactful journey around the Moon as part of NASA’s new Artemis program. NASA aims to propel humans to unprecedented distances, advancing towards establishing a permanent lunar presence and eventually targeting crewed missions to Mars under the Artemis initiative. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman hailed the upcoming mission as a significant advancement in human space exploration, emphasizing its crucial role in paving the way for future lunar and Martian endeavors. Building upon the achievements of Artemis I, a successful uncrewed flight in 2022, Artemis II is scheduled for launch no earlier than February 6, 2026. Among the crew members, Reid Wiseman, designated as the mission commander, was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2009, boasting prior experience as a Flight Engineer aboard the International Space Station. Victor J. Glover, chosen as a NASA astronaut in 2013, will serve as the pilot for Artemis II, having previously piloted the NASA SpaceX Crew-1 mission to the ISS. Christina Koch, also a 2013 NASA astronaut selection, holds the role of mission specialist on Artemis II, holding records for the longest single spaceflight by a woman and participating in pioneering all-female spacewalks. Additionally, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, a former fighter pilot, will make history as the first Canadian to venture to the Moon, bringing a wealth of experience from previous space exploration programs.
