Dozens of individuals are feared trapped under a collapsed heap of waste at a garbage dump, raising concerns of potential burials alive in the incident. The tragic event occurred at the Binaliw Landfill, a privately operated site located in Cebu City, central Philippines, where approximately 50 sanitation workers were engulfed by the sudden collapse of a towering pile of garbage.

A significant rescue operation is currently in progress to locate and extract individuals trapped under the rubble. As of now, one fatality has been confirmed, while 13 survivors have been rescued and hospitalized. Among the affected are landfill workers, though it remains unclear if any nearby residents were also impacted by the disaster.

One of the survivors, a female landfill worker, tragically passed away en route to the hospital, as confirmed by regional police director Brig Gen Roderick Maranan. The remaining survivors sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment for their wounds.

Jaylord Antigua, an office employee at the landfill, recounted the harrowing experience of the garbage mountain collapsing unexpectedly amid favorable weather conditions. Antigua narrowly escaped from his office, which was demolished in the avalanche, sustaining minor injuries in the process.

Search and rescue efforts are ongoing to locate the 38 individuals still missing, as confirmed by Cebu Mayor Nestor Archival and the Office of Civil Defence. The rescue teams are diligently working to recover the missing persons while adhering strictly to safety protocols.

Authorities have released images showing the extensive damage caused by the landslide, with rescue teams using heavy machinery to sift through the debris. Concerned relatives anxiously await news as the search and rescue mission continues, urging for swift progress in locating their loved ones.

Cebu Mayor Nestor Archival announced that an emergency meeting involving authorities and waste management facility officials with 110 employees is scheduled for Friday to assess the situation and plan the next steps. The incident particularly affected a warehouse within the landfill where recyclable waste was sorted, raising questions about the potential impact on nearby structures.

The incident sheds light on the longstanding safety and health risks associated with landfills and open dumpsites in the Philippines, especially in close proximity to impoverished communities where individuals scavenge for valuables and food in the waste piles. This disaster serves as a reminder of the need for improved waste management practices and the closure of illegal dumpsites to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

In a similar event in July 2000, a garbage mound collapse in a suburban shantytown near Manila led to over 200 fatalities, extensive property damage, and the implementation of stricter waste management regulations. The tragic incident underscored the importance of addressing waste disposal practices to safeguard communities and prevent such calamities from reoccurring.
