Team GB has secured its first medal at the Winter Olympics as Matt Weston claimed the gold in the men’s skeleton event. Weston, aged 28, was a top contender for Team GB in Milano Cortina and had a strong performance in the competition, leading after the initial two heats.
His first two heats clocked in at 56.21 and 55.88 respectively, with a combined time of 1:52.09 going into the second day. Weston continued his impressive run with a time of 55.63 in the third heat. The highlight came in his final run, setting a new track record with a time of 55.61. Weston was emotional as he celebrated his historic win with teammate Marcus Wyatt and the Team GB coaching staff.
This victory marked a significant turnaround for Weston, who finished 15th in the previous Winter Olympics. On the other hand, Wyatt improved on the second day in Italy but could only manage a seventh-place finish with a total time of 3:45.77.
Weston’s success put Team GB on the Winter Olympics medal table. German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer secured the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Reflecting on Weston’s performance, Lizzie Yarnold praised his speed and quick decision-making under intense pressure.
Speaking about Weston’s achievement, Team GB’s chef de mission, Eve Muirhead, expressed her excitement for his win and commended his composure during the competition. Weston’s victory was a testament to his dedication and support system.
