Artificial intelligence poses a significant threat to job stability, cautioned Sir Sadiq Khan, emphasizing the urgent need for action to prevent widespread unemployment and inequality. The London Mayor highlighted that over half of workers in the city anticipate AI impacting their jobs within the next year, potentially leading to a surge in job losses.

Addressing the audience on Thursday, Sir Sadiq stressed the critical decision facing society regarding the use of AI as either a tool for positive transformation or a catalyst for job destruction. He announced the establishment of a London Taskforce to swiftly evaluate the implications of AI on the labor market.

Reflecting on the negative consequences of unregulated technology, Sir Sadiq pointed to social media as a cautionary example, citing issues such as mental health crises, online abuse, and misinformation. He urged swift action to prevent the misuse of AI, drawing parallels to past failures in responding to technological advancements.

A recent report by LinkedIn indicated that 70% of job skills will have evolved by 2030, prompting the Mayor to emphasize the need for immediate preparation to ensure a resilient economy and workforce. The upcoming taskforce will focus on developing strategies to equip workers with the necessary skills for the future job landscape.

In light of these challenges, Sir Sadiq called for a collective effort to navigate the transition effectively, stressing the moral, social, and economic imperative to act promptly. The taskforce’s recommendations will play a crucial role in guiding London towards readiness for the evolving demands of the AI-driven economy.
