WhatsApp is on the verge of addressing a major drawback that users have long grappled with, prompting them to take action promptly to stay current. Traditionally, users have only been able to communicate on the platform by sharing phone numbers, a method that is not always ideal.
After a prolonged wait, the Meta-owned app is now rectifying this limitation by introducing unique usernames. This forthcoming feature will enable users to share their usernames instead of divulging their phone numbers.
According to WhatsApp, sharing a phone number can sometimes be a significant step, particularly when interacting with new acquaintances like classmates, neighbors, event attendees, or members of group discussions. The new unique username feature aims to provide users with an alternative way to connect without the need to reveal their contact numbers.
Moreover, this update is set to enhance the privacy of group conversations. It will allow users joining community forums or social circles to engage without immediately exposing their phone numbers to unfamiliar individuals.
WhatsApp has announced that users can now start reserving their preferred usernames in advance of the full rollout. Given the platform’s extensive user base, popular usernames may get claimed swiftly, so early reservations offer users a better chance of securing their desired username without missing out.
To reserve a username, users must update their WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username.
The rollout of this feature will be gradual over the upcoming months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become available in their respective regions.
