Deb Perelman, the creator of Smitten Kitchen, a well-established food blog that celebrates its 20th anniversary this summer, has witnessed significant transformations in the online landscape. Maintaining a philosophy of meeting her audience where they are, Perelman has actively engaged on various social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, always redirecting followers back to her website for recipes and stories.

However, Perelman now confronts a new obstacle in the form of AI summaries. Expressing her concerns, she noted instances where AI generated summaries included excerpts of her recipes without her consent, a practice that she finds alarming and is currently exploring options for AI restriction measures on her site.

Google recently introduced a revamped search feature, “AI Mode,” which mimics conversational interactions akin to ChatGPT or other AI chatbots, garnering over a billion monthly users. Furthermore, Google has started prioritizing comprehensive AI summaries over website links, enabling users to find answers without leaving Google’s main page.

This shift towards accommodating AI-driven interactions presents challenges for website creators reliant on human traffic, as the web landscape adapts to cater to bots that extract information from websites. As human web traffic diminishes, companies like Logik Digital are emphasizing Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) alongside traditional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to enhance a site’s visibility and credibility in the eyes of AI algorithms.

While many independent content creators leverage social media for monetization, websites often depend on ad revenue and subscriptions to sustain their content. The influx of AI bots as visitors raises concerns about the future of original content creation and the financial implications of AI accessing web content.

Considering the escalating costs associated with AI bot activity, Wikimedia Enterprise has established partnerships with major AI companies to offset expenses incurred from providing bulk access to Wikipedia’s content. As web traffic declines, media companies like Reddit and USA Today are contemplating revising their relationship with Google to navigate the changing digital landscape.

Despite the convenience of AI-driven solutions, Deb Perelman underscores the irreplaceable value of individual perspectives in content creation, emphasizing the unique context and personal touch that creators provide, which AI summaries may lack.
