Anusuya Datta, a writer and journalist from Saskatoon, reflects on the journey of finding a true sense of home. The absence of snow during the early December holiday light setup did not diminish the joy of admiring the house. The abundance of windows flooding each room with sunlight struck a chord with the family, making them feel at home instantly.

The simplicity and coziness of the house, complemented by a graceful front lawn and swaying poplar trees in the backyard, captured their hearts. The memories of their childhood home in India, with a lush garden, sparked nostalgia and gratitude for the opportunity to recreate similar experiences with their own family.

The transition from their beloved home in India to a rental apartment in Saskatoon brought a sense of impermanence. The impersonal nature of the apartment, with thin walls and bare spaces, contrasted with the warmth and familiarity they craved. Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision to purchase a house in September marked a new beginning for the family.

Now, settled in their new home, they see beyond the physical structure—a place where memories will be made, milestones celebrated, and roots firmly planted. Saskatoon has transformed from a mere location to a beacon of hope, teaching them that home is not just a place of origin but a deliberate choice.
