Liberal Member of Parliament Shaun Chen has announced his resignation, citing ongoing health issues resulting from a car accident last year. Chen, who has represented Scarborough North since 2015, revealed in a social media statement that the accident caused significant injuries leading to health complications that have hindered his ability to fulfill parliamentary duties in Ottawa. After discussions with his family, Chen expressed his decision to step down from his role as a Member of Parliament.
Prior to his political career, Chen served as the chair of the Toronto District School Board. Prime Minister Mark Carney commended Chen for his dedication to advocating for youth and fighting against racism, wishing him a speedy recovery and success in his future endeavors. Chen’s resignation adds to a recent trend of MPs leaving their positions this summer.
Among those departing, former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault, Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall, and Conservative MP Larry Brock are notable figures. Guilbeault and Wagantall are set to vacate their seats at the end of the month, while Brock will step down in mid-September to pursue a role at the Brantford Crown attorney’s office. Additionally, NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice plans to resign from his Montreal seat by the end of summer to contest provincially for Québec Solidaire in October.
Chen’s resignation is scheduled for the upcoming Saturday, marking another change in the political landscape as several MPs prepare to leave their positions.
