Former Miss Universe Canada winner Ashley Callingbull made a statement during the 2026 Miss Universe Canada pageant, pointing out instances of cultural appropriation. While director Sonny Borrelli was about to announce the top 20 contestants, Callingbull addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of education and reconciliation in understanding and rectifying such mistakes.

The event took place on Aug. 4 in Windsor, Ont., where 35 contestants competed in the national pageantry costume competition. During this segment, some contestants wore culturally insensitive outfits, including a headdress and an “Arctic Beauty” costume, which sparked controversy among Indigenous communities.

Callingbull expressed her shock and disappointment at the use of sacred items in the costumes, highlighting the significance of headdresses in First Nations culture. She demanded an apology on behalf of the Indigenous community and advocated for respect and proper representation moving forward.

Miss Universe Canada issued a statement acknowledging the cultural insensitivity and committed to implementing guidelines for future pageants. The contestants involved also apologized for any offense caused and expressed their commitment to learning and understanding Indigenous cultures.

The incident has brought attention to the need for better education and awareness regarding cultural appropriation. Callingbull’s advocacy for accurate Indigenous representation underscores the importance of respecting cultural traditions and history.
