It seems that Canadians are encountering bears more frequently in recent times. Multiple incidents have been documented in British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, some resulting in fatalities, although fatal attacks are still considered very uncommon, according to experts.
Lana Ciarniello, an independent conservation scientist specializing in human-bear conflict, mentioned that various factors, including increased media coverage, are contributing to the perception of a rise in bear encounters. She explained that for black bears, encounters can vary yearly due to factors like food availability and environmental disruptions.
Ciarniello highlighted that this year, factors like dried-out berries and wildfires may be driving conflicts with bears. To mitigate such encounters, communities are advised to implement “bear-smart” practices such as securing garbage properly.
Regarding grizzly bear encounters in backcountry areas, Ciarniello emphasized the importance of being aware of environmental and behavioral factors. For instance, during berry season with dense foliage, hikers are advised to make noise and carry bear spray to minimize negative encounters.
Recent incidents of bear encounters in Canada have underscored the importance of bear safety measures. A 72-year-old woman was seriously injured by a grizzly bear in a remote hiking area near Pemberton, British Columbia. In another incident, a man survived a grizzly bear attack in the same region. Additionally, a three-year-old girl was injured by a black bear while playing in her backyard.
Tragic incidents involving black bear attacks have also occurred in Saskatchewan, resulting in fatalities. A couple from Regina was killed in a black bear attack at McTavish Lake, while a man working at a uranium exploration site in northeastern Saskatchewan lost his life in a black bear attack.
Efforts are ongoing to enhance public awareness and safety measures to reduce human-bear conflicts across Canada.
