Around 1,200 employees at National Steel Car in Hamilton commenced a strike at midnight on Wednesday after turning down a contract proposal. United Steelworkers (USW) Local 7135 President Frank Crowder revealed that the vote, which occurred on Tuesday evening, had an impressive turnout rate. He noted that 91 percent of the workers participated in the vote, with a significant 79 percent rejecting the contract offer.

Crowder expressed that the workers are advocating for increased wages and for the union to have a say in a contentious incentive program that he described as “risky.” According to him, the company’s wage increments are not keeping pace with inflation rates.

Michael Schram, a welder and union steward at the plant, emphasized that his current income is insufficient to sustain himself. He highlighted the financial struggles faced by longstanding employees like himself, citing inadequate pension plans that prevent many workers, particularly those over 60 years old, from retiring.

The dispute centers around an incentive scheme at National Steel Car that allows employees to accept lower pay in exchange for a 25% bonus on their wages if they meet production targets. Although the program has historically been managed fairly, recent elevated production quotas have made it unattainable for workers. Crowder underscored that the union has no influence over the program as per their existing collective agreement.

In 2023, National Steel Car experienced a 41-day strike that concluded with a 13% wage hike. Crowder highlighted that some workers endured up to six months without receiving the additional 25% pay, resulting in a substantial loss of expected income. He raised concerns about the program’s impact on worker safety and linked rushed job tasks to workplace fatalities and injuries.

The union is open to resuming negotiations with the company, as Crowder mentioned that the company abruptly ended discussions. National Steel Car declined to provide a statement, citing the unavailability of their spokesperson.
