On National Acadian Day last year, Alexis Belliveau, while promoting his band on social media, discovered the absence of an Acadian flag emoji. Emojis, widely used to convey emotions and ideas in text messages, include numerous flags among their vast collection. Belliveau and his friend, Julien Robichaud, both residents of Moncton, N.B., are currently preparing a proposal to create an Acadian flag emoji through Unicode, a non-profit organization headquartered in California responsible for reviewing and sanctioning emoji proposals.
Expressing the significance of the Acadian flag in digital communication, Belliveau emphasized the importance of having an emoji to represent Acadian pride. Recognizing the opportunity to engage younger generations in Acadian heritage, he stressed the potential impact of such an emoji on cultural expression.
To bolster their application, Belliveau and Robichaud initiated an online campaign, featuring a website detailing Acadian history, the symbolism of the flag, and a petition with over 10,000 signatures. Encouraging support from the community, Belliveau highlighted the role of widespread backing in demonstrating the emoji’s cultural relevance and potential usage.
Despite the absence of an official Acadian flag emoji, Belliveau noted that individuals have creatively expressed their Acadian identity using sequences of existing emojis. To circumvent Unicode’s criteria regarding flag emojis, Belliveau proposed a combination of the star and the flag of France emojis as a unique solution.
Unicode’s evaluation criteria for approving emojis encompass aspects such as distinctiveness, global utilization, versatility in meaning, and applicability in sentences. Belliveau aims to raise awareness among Acadians worldwide and intends to formally submit the proposal in the upcoming winter, targeting Acadian communities in various regions like Louisiana, France, Quebec, and across Canada.
