Dolly Parton distributed millions of free books to children worldwide through her Imagination Library, a gesture she considered an honor, as per Chaya Kulkarni, a member of the book selection committee for the program and the director of infant and early mental health promotion at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children.
Parton, who passed away at the age of 80, was celebrated for her contributions not only as a country music and pop culture icon but also as a philanthropist. She initiated the Imagination Library in 1995, providing over 300 million books globally, including five million in Canada and 730,595 in 2025 alone. The program offers eligible children a monthly free book until they reach five years of age.
The initiative was a tribute to Parton’s father, who was illiterate. In a statement following her demise, her family requested donations to the Imagination Library in lieu of flowers, and the program has confirmed its continuity in delivering books.
Kulkarni shared insights on Parton’s character, highlighting her kindness, generosity, and humility. She emphasized that for Parton, the ability to impact the lives of millions of children globally through the Imagination Library was a privilege rooted in her personal experiences and heartfelt intentions.
The Imagination Library operates on a community-based model where communities must collectively fund the program to provide free books to registered families.
