One of the young grizzly bears at the Calgary Zoo, Fitz, briefly ventured out of his habitat, prompting emergency response procedures to be activated. The zoo’s staff, along with the Calgary Police Service, successfully immobilized Fitz and safely moved him back to his designated area without any harm to visitors, employees, volunteers, or other animals.
The incident occurred before the zoo opened to the public, leading to a temporary closure of the Wild Canada area where the bears reside. Following a thorough assessment of the area, it was reopened later in the day. The zoo will conduct a review of the situation as part of its standard post-incident protocol.
Authorities reassured the public that there was no danger during the incident, as Fitz simply wandered around before being tranquilized by zoo staff. The police remained on standby while the zoo managed the situation. Fitz and his brother Turner were introduced to the zoo after being orphaned when their mother was killed near Diamond Valley last year.
