The Kremlin stated that U.S. CIA Director John Ratcliffe engaged with Russian intelligence officials during his recent visit to Moscow but did not have a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. President Donald Trump characterized the visit as “semi-routine.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov informed the media that Putin was briefed on the discussions from Tuesday’s visit. This visit occurred amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the impasse in negotiations between the United States and Iran.
Peskov refrained from disclosing the specifics of the conversations or providing additional information but mentioned that communications had taken place through security services. He emphasized that there were no direct meetings with the Russian president and assured that Putin was promptly updated on all developments.
Although Trump did not specify the purpose of Ratcliffe’s trip in a radio interview, he expressed optimism about the potential outcomes. Trump highlighted the efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine and suggested that the visit could lead to positive results.
The last recorded visit of a U.S. CIA director to Moscow was in November 2021 when Ratcliffe’s predecessor, William Burns, met with Putin, preceding the commencement of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Regarding the impact of high-level U.S. officials’ visits on U.S.-Russia relations, Peskov noted the importance of continued contacts between the intelligence agencies of both countries, emphasizing their potential to positively influence the bilateral relations amid the current challenging environment.
