Elections Alberta is seeking skilled electoral staff from various regions across Canada to provide support during the upcoming October referendum. This collaborative effort among electoral management bodies is a common practice during significant election events, according to Elections Alberta spokesperson Maia Hanrahan.
The additional support from experienced electoral staff will be crucial, particularly after the voting process ends. The 2026 referendum, scheduled for October 19, will involve Albertans responding to 10 questions, including issues related to the province’s status within Canada and other matters like immigration and constitutional subjects.
Elections BC and Elections Saskatchewan have received requests for assistance from Elections Alberta. While Elections BC is evaluating the request against its own operational requirements for the upcoming municipal elections on October 17, Elections Canada is also considering providing support but has not confirmed any commitments yet.
Elections Saskatchewan has offered staff support to assist Alberta in organizing the referendum, considering it a valuable opportunity for professional development for its own team. Additionally, Elections Alberta’s recruitment campaign has been successful, receiving over 30,000 applications from interested Albertans towards its goal of recruiting 60,000 electoral workers.
Former Alberta Chief Electoral Officer Lorne Gibson highlighted challenges in securing assistance from outside jurisdictions due to limited resources and high costs associated with travel, accommodation, and salaries. He also mentioned the eligibility criteria for election officers in Alberta, emphasizing the importance of finding qualified individuals to uphold a non-partisan mandate during the referendum.
Gibson expressed concerns about potential distractions, such as the recent byelection called by Premier Danielle Smith, which could impact preparations for the referendum. Despite these challenges, the collaboration among electoral bodies across Canada aims to ensure a successful and well-organized referendum process.
