Serita Thurton netted two goals in the opening half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild pulled off a surprising 4-3 victory against the top-ranked Ottawa Rapid in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson found the back of the net in the 15th minute to give the home side a 1-0 lead, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 around 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young scored in the 38th minute, while Melanie Forbes leveled the score at 2-2 just one minute into stoppage time before halftime.
Right before the break, Thurton scored her second goal of the match, securing the Wild’s lead.
Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. The Ottawa team also saw their impressive 10-match unbeaten streak come to an end.
Despite controlling possession for 54% of the match, the Rapid were outshot 16-13, with 9 shots on target compared to 6 by the Wild.
The Wild earned six corners compared to Ottawa’s one, with the Rapid receiving one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to equalize, and then added a second goal five minutes into stoppage time in the second half, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes opened the scoring in the 19th minute for the fourth-ranked Tides.
The fifth-placed Rise controlled 56% of possession and outshot the Tides 18-13, with 6 shots on target compared to 4 by the visitors.
Halifax took four of the six corners, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
