Kevin Murison receives a variety of responses when he performs his bagpipes on a bustling Ottawa sidewalk during weekends, with most being positive. Murison, aged 35, often entertains passersby in full Highland attire on the bridge near the Ottawa Locks beside the Château Laurier. He shared that while some individuals cover their ears as they walk by, the majority offer enthusiastic feedback, praising his music and expressing their admiration.
Last year, a tourist from Brazil was deeply moved by Murison’s performance, shedding tears and embracing him warmly, even leaving her contact details in case he visits South America. However, not all encounters have been pleasant. Murison recounted an incident where a man demanded he stop playing, and when he refused, the man threw a drink at him and stole money from his open pipe case.
Yet, the most alarming incident occurred on a Saturday afternoon when Murison sustained injuries. While playing at his usual spot, a man approached him under the guise of taking a photo but suddenly brandished a knife. The ensuing events were somewhat unclear to Murison, but he found himself injured when the assailant departed.
Following the attack, a bystander contacted the authorities, leading to a swift police response. The suspect, a 25-year-old male, was apprehended nearby and is facing multiple charges, including assault with a weapon and probation violations. Ottawa police described the attack as unprovoked.
Murison, who has been playing the bagpipes for approximately 15 years, expressed his lifelong passion for the instrument. Beyond busking, he participates in Highland games and parades with his group, Ottawa Caledonian Pipes and Drums. Despite the harrowing experience, Murison remains resolute, believing that the attack may have targeted his bagpipes rather than him personally.
In response to the incident, Murison’s band provided him with a new bag, demonstrating the supportive camaraderie within the bagpiping community. While his recovery necessitates a temporary hiatus from playing, Murison is determined to return to his beloved pastime once he has healed.
Despite the setback, Murison remains undeterred, expressing his eagerness to resume playing once his hand has fully recovered. The resilient bagpiper remains committed to sharing his music with the public, undeterred by the recent unfortunate events.
