The Ottawa Redblacks have officially set a new record for the longest losing streak in the modern era of the CFL. Their 15th consecutive loss came on Friday night against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, extending back to the previous season. This surpasses the previous record held by the Shreveport Pirates, who lost 14 consecutive games in 1994, according to CFL historian and league’s associate vice-president of football analytics and statistics, Steve Daniel.

Jimmy Fata, a devoted Redblacks fan, expressed disappointment at the team’s current standing, particularly after witnessing the record-setting loss in Winnipeg. Fata highlighted the lack of clarity on the root cause of the team’s struggles and expressed a desire for solutions to be found.

Traditionally, during home games, a log section is cut for every Redblacks touchdown, known as a “wood cookie,” with the team’s logo seared into it. Fata, involved in this practice, noted the recent scarcity of these celebratory moments due to the team’s ongoing losing streak.

The Redblacks’ streak now ranks as the third-longest in CFL history dating back to 1907, with the upcoming game against the Montreal Alouettes potentially tying them with the Hamilton Wildcats for second place. The league’s evolution post-World War II was marked by professionalization and increased competitiveness, contrasting with the amateur status of earlier teams like the Ottawa Rough Riders and Ottawa Senators.

Daniel emphasized the need for continued roster improvements, particularly on defense, to address the team’s performance issues. He commended recent changes made by head coach Ryan Dinwiddie and viewed the team’s performance in the latest game as a positive step forward.

Despite the challenges, Fata stressed the importance of unwavering support for the team through thick and thin, likening it to supporting a child through both good and bad times. He remains optimistic about the team’s future despite the ongoing struggles.
