FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed his intention to seek re-election, announced the world soccer governing body on Sunday. Infantino has come under scrutiny for his failed proposal to sell shares in the World Cup but remains determined to pursue a fourth and final term in office until 2031.
Despite mounting calls for his resignation, FIFA affirmed that Infantino will run for re-election in 2027. A FIFA spokesperson reiterated, “The FIFA President’s decision to stand for re-election in 2027, as announced in April, remains unchanged. Mr. Infantino is set to seek re-election.”
UEFA, the governing body for European soccer, has been vocal in urging Infantino to step down, citing a loss of confidence in his leadership. Several national associations, including the English FA, have withdrawn their support for Infantino’s bid for re-election. When questioned about his future at the opening of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, Infantino declined to comment.
Acknowledging mistakes in the handling of the controversial World Cup stake sale plan, FIFA issued an apology and vowed to prevent similar errors in the future. However, the apology has not relieved the pressure on Infantino’s position. The deadline for presidential candidates to enter the upcoming election is November 18, four months before the vote takes place.
