U.S. President Donald Trump announced a plan on Wednesday to provide a $5,000 “Trump dividend” to every American adult if the Republicans maintain control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections in November. This proposal was put forward during the Republican Party’s inaugural midterm convention. The logistics of the payments and their legality remain unclear. The plan, targeting around 270 million American adults, would amount to approximately $1.35 trillion and necessitate congressional approval.

In a lengthy prime-time speech lasting an hour and 45 minutes, Trump celebrated what he termed as “the greatest two years in the history of the presidency,” positioning himself as a central figure in the upcoming election despite declining popularity. However, it is uncertain whether his speech resonated with crucial swing voters who, according to opinion polls, have been drifting away from the Republican Party due to concerns over the rising cost of living and tensions with Iran.

Trump warned against handing the country’s future to the Democrats and urged voters to support the Republicans for a prosperous future. The two-day convention in Dallas, labeled informally as “Trumpapalooza,” underscored the strong connection between the Republicans’ electoral prospects and Trump. The event showcased the party’s strategy leading up to the November 3 midterm elections.

The focus on Trump represents a gamble that his influence can rally the same voters who propelled him to the presidency in 2016, despite record-low approval ratings. Trump pledged to make multiple visits to battleground states and districts in the final eight weeks before Election Day.

Many Republican officials faced a dilemma at the convention, balancing the need to distance themselves from Trump to broaden their appeal while avoiding alienating his dedicated supporters. Several Republicans, including Rep. Tom Barrett, Sen. Dan Sullivan, and Sen. Susan Collins, who are in challenging reelection battles, opted to skip the convention. However, some candidates in competitive House and Senate races attended the event and were scheduled to speak.

Trump had previously discussed the idea of a dividend but had not linked it to his party’s electoral success. Earlier this year, he proposed a $2,000 dividend without seeking congressional approval. The $5,000 payment would exceed the amount Americans received in direct government aid during Trump’s first term due to COVID-19 relief measures.

This move by Trump to offer a dividend to voters is reminiscent of Elon Musk’s cash giveaway efforts to influence elections in recent years.
