After dedicating five years to advocating for individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), Christina Applegate has disclosed that medical professionals now suspect she received an incorrect diagnosis.

Expressing her feelings on the matter, Applegate described it as a setback, stating, “To me, it feels like I’m starting over.” She shared this revelation during a two-part episode of the MeSsy podcast, co-hosted with Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who also has MS. Applegate took a hiatus from the show to process this new information.

During the podcast, Applegate emotionally conveyed that upon learning she did not have MS, contrary to her doctor’s initial diagnosis, she did not experience relief but rather a sense of confusion and deterioration in her condition. She mentioned ongoing issues with her legs and other symptoms persisting.

Multiple sclerosis is a complex autoimmune condition affecting the central nervous system. It involves the immune system mistakenly attacking the myelin, a protective covering for nerves in the central nervous system. This interference disrupts communication between the brain and body, leading to various symptoms like numbness, fatigue, mobility difficulties, memory problems, and sometimes vision impairment.

Dr. Mark Freedman, the director of the multiple sclerosis research unit at The Ottawa Hospital, likened the damage caused by MS to a wire’s insulation wearing off, leaving the inner copper exposed. This exposure can result in inflammation attacking the nerve, leading to permanent disconnection.

Misdiagnosis of MS is not uncommon globally. Studies have reported misdiagnosis rates ranging from five to 41 percent, with an estimated average of a 15 percent misdiagnosis rate across various studies.

Initially announcing her MS diagnosis on social media in August 2021, Applegate recounted her journey of undergoing numerous tests, including spinal MRIs, brain MRIs, and a spinal tap, before being diagnosed with MS due to the presence of brain lesions. However, a recent evaluation revealed she did not have MS, leaving her without an alternative diagnosis for her ongoing symptoms.

Expressing her distress over the situation, Applegate mentioned feeling like she had let down those who looked up to her as a figure representing MS awareness. She highlighted the uncertainty and emotional toll of losing the explanation for her health challenges.

Applegate, known for her roles in movies like “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” and TV series such as “Dead to Me,” emphasized the need for accurate diagnosis and the potential risks of treating a condition one does not have with powerful medications.

In conclusion, despite the misdiagnosis, Jamie-Lynn Sigler reassured Applegate of the continued importance of her advocacy work and expressed hope for a positive outcome, emphasizing that Applegate’s story could inspire others facing similar challenges to find solace and resilience.
