Four individuals, including two teenagers and an infant, were rescued from a rapidly spreading house fire by an off-duty RCMP officer who acted swiftly to aid a desperate man in extracting his family through a basement window.

Constable Anton Lorde, while on his way home from duty on July 18, noticed a dense plume of smoke rising into the air, leading him to Mount Pleasant Street in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Upon arrival, he encountered a house engulfed in flames, emanating from the front, sides, and roof. Initially assuming the house was empty due to the presence of onlookers, Lorde focused on clearing the street for incoming fire trucks.

However, after inquiring about the occupants from a neighbor, he was informed that multiple individuals, including children, resided in the house. Prompted by this revelation, Lorde swiftly proceeded to the backyard, where he began knocking on windows of the burning structure in search of any trapped individuals.

His efforts were rewarded when a terrified boy peeked through the blinds at him. Despite momentarily losing sight of the boy, Lorde persisted in urging the occupants to evacuate, eventually being joined by the father, who assisted in breaking a window to free his family.

Peter Magliaro, the homeowner, recounted the harrowing experience of rushing home upon learning of the fire, braving intense heat to ensure the safety of his children. With the help of Lorde and his brother-in-law, Magliaro successfully evacuated his children, including a four-month-old baby, from the burning house.

The rescue, although partially a blur to Lorde, highlighted the collaborative effort of the community in saving lives. Magliaro commended Lorde’s valor, emphasizing the unity displayed in the face of adversity.

Acknowledged for his heroic actions, Lorde humbly attributed his presence at the scene to fate, underscoring the collective effort that averted a tragedy. The incident, currently under investigation by authorities, has prompted the community to rally in support of the affected family.

Magliaro, now residing in temporary accommodation, expressed his determination to rebuild despite the challenges, vowing to restore his home of 35 years. The community stands united in assisting the family during this trying period, showcasing resilience and compassion in the aftermath of the devastating fire.
