A tragic incident occurred as a couple was found deceased in a hot bathtub following their daughter’s birthday celebration. Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, and Ana Carolina Silva, 41, were found lifeless in a motel room on August 11. Medical professionals determined that the couple had succumbed to heatstroke and organ failure. Their family raised concerns when they couldn’t reach the couple after dropping off their daughter.
The couple had celebrated their daughter’s fourth birthday at a food park and then went to a nightclub before checking into the Dallas Motel in São José, Brazil, after midnight. Authorities initiated a missing persons investigation and discovered the couple unconscious in the bathtub. Investigators revealed that Jeferson, a military police officer, and Ana Carolina, a nail salon owner, had passed out in hot water while a space heater was operating.
A toxicology report from Globo G1 indicated high alcohol levels and traces of cocaine in their systems. Forensic tests ruled out other potential causes of death like electric shock, drowning, or carbon monoxide poisoning. According to Brazil’s Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza, the deaths were attributed to exogenous poisoning, leading to heatstroke, severe dehydration, organ failure, and ultimately death.
Chief of Police Felipe Simão Gomes stated that the evidence and substances found on the bodies pointed to a sudden death without third-party involvement. The couple, who had been together for nearly two decades, were known as caring parents and sociable individuals with no history of violence. Ana Carolina’s family disputed claims of her being a regular drug user, suggesting she might have been coerced into taking cocaine due to potential physical incompatibility with the substance when combined with alcohol.
