An “innocent and defenseless” infant was violently assaulted by a man while asleep in their crib, with the horrifying incident observed by the baby’s mother through a baby monitor.
Shane Heighway was captured on camera entering the room of the eight-month-old child before attacking and covering their face with his hands in August 2024. The 38-year-old’s appalling actions were recorded on a baby monitor, which alerted the mother who promptly contacted the authorities.
Heighway, residing in Porth-y-Waen in Oswestry, Shropshire, was apprehended by police officers and subsequently charged with child cruelty and intentional suffocation. He admitted to the crimes and was sentenced to nearly two years in prison for the brutal and unprovoked assault on the infant.
Medical reports presented during the trial emphasized that it was sheer luck that the baby survived the attack. Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Daniel Bushell from Shropshire’s protecting vulnerable people team condemned the assault as “horrendous.”
“This appalling assault ranks as one of the most shocking events I have encountered, not only in my profession but in my life,” he expressed. “Although as a police officer, we are exposed to distressing situations, this footage will remain etched in my memory for a considerable period.
“The viciousness of this unprovoked attack on an innocent and defenseless baby cannot be downplayed. This investigation has left a lasting impact on all involved, including those who had to witness the distressing footage of the assault.
“I am immensely thankful that the young victim escaped severe physical harm, and thanks to the team’s efforts, further harm was prevented. I extend my gratitude to everyone who played a role in handling this incident, including the prompt response officers who detained Heighway and my colleagues in PVP who contributed to his prosecution. I urge anyone reading about this case to remember that each case involves real individuals who have suffered greatly, beyond mere statistics and headlines.”
Local media reported that Heighway was observed on the baby monitor entering the room while the infant was babbling. The assailant seized the baby’s leg, suspended them upside down, as shown in court footage.
Subsequently, he forcefully thrust the baby back into the crib and covered the baby’s face with his hands.
DC Bushell remarked: “I hope that today’s sentence aids in the healing process for everyone following this tragic incident.
“I am content that Heighway has been given a prison sentence, ensuring the removal of a dangerous individual from society. This case sends a clear message to those who target the most vulnerable – your actions will not go unnoticed, and law enforcement will act promptly.
“We remain steadfast in protecting those who cannot protect themselves, and those who harm them will face the full consequences of the law.”
