Keir Starmer is looking to start fresh in 2026 after a challenging year. Following a brief holiday at Chequers with his family during the Christmas break, the Prime Minister is back to a packed schedule with significant political events on the horizon. Crucial elections in Scotland, Wales, and local English councils will be pivotal for Mr. Starmer, who is facing scrutiny over his leadership.

The Labour Party has been trailing in the polls, facing pressure from Reform led by Nigel Farage on the right and the resurgent Green Party on the left. Mr. Starmer has emphasized addressing the cost of living crisis as his top priority in the effort to revitalize his party’s prospects.

In a statement made in November, he affirmed his commitment to leading Labour into the next election, stressing the importance of addressing cost of living challenges. He reiterated his focus on improving people’s financial well-being and enabling progress in their lives.

Apart from the cost of living issue, other significant matters are anticipated to take center stage. Prioritizing the improvement of the NHS, fulfilling promises made during the election campaign, and tackling issues such as jury trial reforms and prison overcrowding are expected to draw attention.

Addressing immigration concerns remains a critical agenda item. Efforts to combat small boat crossings and criminal networks facilitating illegal entries into the UK are ongoing priorities. Additionally, ending the practice of asylum hotels is deemed essential.

Managing delicate peace talks involving Donald Trump, Ukraine, and Russia poses another challenge for the PM. With military leaders highlighting threats posed by Vladimir Putin, national defense has garnered increased attention. The uncertain future of Gaza and the ongoing struggles faced by Palestinians despite fragile peace add to the complexity of international relations.
