A young man who went missing for five days after disappearing during a hazardous hike has been located following an extensive rescue mission.

Roberto Farias Tomaz was discovered safe on Monday after vanishing on Pico Parana, the highest peak in southern Brazil, on January 1. The 19-year-old had embarked on the hike on New Year’s Day with a friend but started feeling unwell during the ascent, as reported by firefighters.

Upon reaching the summit and beginning their descent at 6:30 am on New Year’s Day, the duo encountered two other groups. Shortly after, Roberto got separated, prompting a search operation involving police and firefighters.

After an exhaustive five-day search, Roberto was found on Monday, having trekked 20km through challenging terrain and forests to reach the Cacatu area of Antonina. He sought help at a farm, leading to his rescue and subsequent hospitalization for evaluation. Despite lacking a phone, Roberto sustained himself with limited food and water supplies.

In a social media video, Roberto shared, “My body is bruised, I have cuts, and I lost my glasses, but I’m safe.” Tests revealed he is in a stable condition with mild dehydration and hematomas on his lower limbs.

Roberto’s family, residing in Pinhais, Metropolitan Region of Curitiba, expressed relief and gratitude upon reuniting with him, thanking all involved in the search efforts.

Governor Ratinho Junior commended the over 100 firefighters and approximately 300 volunteers for their dedication in locating Roberto. The State Secretary of Public Security, Colonel Hudson Leoncio Teixeira, highlighted the joint efforts that led to Roberto’s safe return from Pico Parana, a renowned challenging trail known for its length and high risk factor in the region.
