The United Kingdom has acquired a cutting-edge weapon system capable of firing eight rounds per minute while traveling at speeds up to 100km/h.

Known as the RCH 155, this innovative mounted weapon is designed to be attached to a BOXER armored vehicle, with a striking range of 70km. Through a £52 million agreement between the UK and Germany, the RCH 155 provides a significant enhancement to British military capabilities, drawing insights from recent conflicts such as those in Ukraine.

This state-of-the-art technology boasts an impressive operational range of 700km without the need for refueling, equivalent to a journey from Cornwall to Newcastle. Unlike conventional artillery systems that require halting for setup before firing, the RCH 155 can engage targets while in motion, enhancing its speed and making it a challenging target for adversaries. With advanced automation, only two crew members are needed to operate the weapon, enabling it to engage targets from any direction without repositioning.

Luke Pollard MP, the Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, emphasized the significance of this new artillery system, highlighting its capability to fire while on the move. The lessons learned from conflicts like the one in Ukraine have shaped the development of this weapon, enabling the British Army to strike targets at long distances while swiftly evading counter-fire to maintain offensive capabilities. These insights are guiding procurement decisions and aligning with the objectives outlined in the Strategic Defence Review.

Currently, soldiers are utilizing the 14 Archer artillery systems as an interim replacement for the AS90 guns provided to Ukraine. Under the collaborative agreement, the UK and Germany will exchange test data and resources to ensure both countries have access to top-tier equipment.

Edward Cutts, the Senior Responsible Owner of Mobile Fires in the Army, commended the joint effort with Germany, citing the effectiveness of the Trinity House Agreement in accelerating the deployment of advanced artillery capabilities for the British Army in a cost-efficient manner. The RCH 155 sets a new standard in mobile artillery, combining formidable firepower with rapid repositioning abilities, enhancing the soldiers’ readiness with cutting-edge technology and reinforcing the interoperability between UK and German forces crucial for NATO’s collective defense.

In recent developments, Defence Secretary John Healey issued a stern warning to Vladimir Putin, asserting the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and investing in the mobilization of British troops at the onset of a peace agreement. This statement follows the launch of a new military intelligence service in response to escalating threats to the UK, including cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and risks to global maritime routes.
