England’s Mark Wood faces an extended absence due to injury, casting doubt on his availability beyond initial expectations as England made a strong comeback in the Ashes. Joe Root’s remarkable unbeaten century in Australia’s first inning at The Gabba propelled England to a commanding position on day one of the second Test match.

Root displayed dominance with a score of 135 not out, achieving his 40th Test century while guiding England to a total of 325-9, supported by contributions from Zak Crawley (76) and Jofra Archer (32 not out). Despite Australia having their moments, the day belonged to Ben Stokes’ team.

However, concerns grew off the field with Wood possibly missing the upcoming Adelaide Test due to a knee injury. The pace bowler, who was expected to sit out only the second Test, revealed uncertainties about his return, hinting at a potential absence until after Christmas.

Wood expressed hope for a comeback in Melbourne or Sydney Tests but emphasized the need to recover fully before resuming play. The 35-year-old has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, with his recent elbow issue sidelining him for 15 months before his Perth appearance.

The ongoing absence of Wood forced a lineup change for Stokes, with Will Jacks taking his place in Brisbane. Former England captain Michael Atherton highlighted Wood’s significance in the pace strategy for winning the Ashes, acknowledging the setback could limit his impact in the series.

Australia’s Mitchell Starc shone with a remarkable 6-71 performance, showcasing his prowess with the pink ball. England, adapting their strategy, included a spin option in Jacks to bolster their lineup with additional batting depth.
