Incredible photographs depict the return of snow to various regions of the UK as temperatures continue to drop. Yellow warnings have been issued across the country following frigid overnight temperatures as low as -11C in some areas. The severe cold has caused disruptions, leading to the grounding of numerous flights at Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon. Commuters have been facing challenges on roads, railways, and in the air.

The wintry conditions are far from over, with more freezing weather expected as the Arctic conditions persist into 2026. Snow depth predictions from Metdesk indicate that a significant swath of Wales and England could see up to 10.6 inches of snow by this Friday. The affected area spans from Swansea to Norwich, with the deepest snow accumulation anticipated in Wales and the Brecon Beacons National Park, where nearly a foot of snow may settle. Residents in other parts of the UK are advised to stay alert for further updates from the Met Office.

The return to school has been disrupted, with hundreds of schools closed today. The UK Health Security Agency has issued Amber Cold Health Alerts for all of England until January 9, cautioning that the extreme cold weather could pose risks, especially for vulnerable populations such as individuals over 65 or those with underlying health conditions.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert highlighted the various winter weather hazards facing the country, including snow showers and icy conditions. He mentioned that while snow showers are expected to intensify in northern Scotland, milder air moving eastward could bring rain to the south, with the potential for organized snowfall along the boundary of warm and cold air masses. Strong winds are also anticipated later in the week.

The images captured during this snowy period showcase scenes of people enjoying the wintry weather across different parts of the UK, from snow angels in Cambridgeshire to a robin perched in North Wales. The photographs depict a range of activities in the snow, from clearing heavy snowfall in Yorkshire to breaking ice for a cold water dip in West Lothian. The wintry conditions have even led to a police car being covered in snow and a train being snowed-in at Insch.
