A prominent supporter of the Labour Party has called on the government to urgently address the issue of high energy bills. Dale Vince, an environmental entrepreneur and the founder of Ecotricity, has proposed three straightforward steps to reduce costs, curb inflation, and stimulate economic growth simultaneously.

Vince advocates for decoupling the pricing of renewable energy from the volatile global gas market, which he believes could have saved over £43 billion in the last five years alone. He has reached out to all members of parliament and published a special newspaper edition to emphasize his proposals.

His call to action follows the recent announcement by energy regulator Ofgem that the price cap for millions of households will increase to an average of £1,758 annually starting in January. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is anticipated to introduce measures to assist with energy bills in the upcoming Budget, such as potentially eliminating VAT on energy bills, providing an average saving of £84 per customer.

Vince supports the idea of removing VAT on energy bills but suggests compensating for the loss by levying VAT on air travel. He argues that half of the British population does not fly each year, with the wealthiest 10% accounting for half of all flights taken.

According to Vince, his proposed three-point strategy could potentially reduce energy bills by around £20 billion annually over a five-year period. In addition to addressing the link to wholesale gas prices, he recommends tightening regulations on energy network companies, many of which are foreign-owned and reportedly enjoy an average profit margin of 40%.

In a more contentious move, Vince proposes providing price stability for North Sea oil and gas producers, despite criticism of fossil fuel companies for their environmental impact. He asserts that significant economic benefits are within reach by rectifying what he views as an exploitative system that burdens households and undermines the British economy.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, also featured in the special newspaper edition, denounces the current situation where many families struggle to afford heating during the winter months and highlights the need for reform in the energy market and government policies to address the crisis. He refutes claims by Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoch that investment in renewable energy is the root cause of high bills, emphasizing the necessity of ensuring consumers benefit from the affordability of clean energy sources.

This proposed overhaul aims to create a fairer and more sustainable energy system that benefits both consumers and the economy, drawing attention to the need for immediate action to alleviate the financial strain on households.
