British intelligence agency, His Majesty’s Government Communications Centre (HMGCC), is seeking expertise from various creative fields, including Christmas pantomime costume designers, to inspire innovative gadget designs. Established on the brink of World War Two, the HMGCC is exploring novel methods to conceal advanced technology within garments. Engineers at this James Bond-esque facility are collaborating with professionals from the TV, film, and pantomime industries to explore practical applications and wearable tech concepts.

In the past, the agency has solicited experts to contribute to the development of prosthetic facial disguises using lifelike materials to evade detection systems. Originating in 1938 at Hanslope Park, the covert agency initially focused on establishing secure communications for international spies and diplomats. Renowned figure Alan Turing collaborated with HMGCC on speech encryption during WWII, following his pivotal role in deciphering the Enigma code at Bletchley Park.

Currently, the base is dedicated to addressing the UK’s technological security requirements for domestic and global operations, including intelligence gathering. With hundreds of scientists and engineers on staff, HMGCC operates under the oversight of Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper. Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty emphasized the importance of innovation in developing cutting-edge technology to counter evolving national security threats and safeguard the nation.

CEO George Williamson highlighted the diverse range of technology fields covered in the agency’s Co-Creation challenges, spanning quantum sensing, electronics, and AI. HMGCC aims to foster cross-sector collaboration by engaging inventors from various industries, encouraging them to reimagine their technologies and explore new applications that could contribute to national security efforts.
