Paracetamol, a widely used medication in the United Kingdom, is popular for its pain-relieving and fever-reducing properties. Approximately 200 million packs of this painkiller are purchased without a prescription annually in the UK.

Despite its common use, it may not be suitable for everyone. A significant portion, roughly one in four UK adults, falls into a category that should seek advice from a healthcare professional before taking paracetamol to prevent potential adverse reactions.

The National Health Service (NHS) advises individuals who exceed the recommended alcohol intake of 14 units per week to consult a doctor or pharmacist before using paracetamol. This precaution is necessary as both alcohol and paracetamol are metabolized by the liver, putting extra strain on the liver when consumed together.

Recent statistics indicate that around 25% of UK adults surpass the recommended alcohol limit. Other groups that should exercise caution before using paracetamol include individuals with liver or kidney issues, those taking specific medications, and individuals with a history of allergic reactions to paracetamol or other drugs.

Individuals weighing less than 50kg may require a reduced dosage, as per NHS guidelines. For adults not falling into these high-risk categories and with medical approval, the recommended dosage is two 500mg tablets, four times within a 24-hour period.

It is crucial to wait at least four hours between doses, with a maximum limit of eight 500mg tablets per day. If taking 1g tablets, the maximum dosage is four tablets in 24 hours.

In the event of an overdose, even if no symptoms are present, individuals are advised to contact 111 for guidance. The NHS recommends seeking immediate medical attention and not driving oneself to the hospital if necessary, urging individuals to bring along the paracetamol packaging, any remaining medication, and other prescribed drugs.
