The organizers of Your Party aimed to move past contentious disputes during their recent founding conference. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn emphasized the need for unity in his address to over 2,000 delegates, urging everyone to come together.

Despite rumors of disruption, only one heckler was barely audible, and there was no stage intrusion at the event. The party has been grappling with internal conflicts since its inception, including issues related to donations, membership launch problems, and the departure of two independent MPs, which has inadvertently benefited the Greens.

Corbyn, who returned to the same stage where he last appeared as Labour leader in 2018, cautioned against division and emphasized the importance of seizing the moment to advocate for genuine socialism and social justice.

Shortly after, chaos ensued at the conference when former Labour MP Zarah Sultana, a co-founder of the party, expressed disappointment over expulsions from the party just before the conference. She rejected the idea of expelling individuals and stressed the importance of inclusivity within the party.

Following a brief boycott, Sultana later delivered her keynote speech, acknowledging shortcomings in the party’s establishment process and apologizing for them. Despite criticism from undisclosed sources within the party, she celebrated the members’ decision to opt for a committee of “ordinary members” to lead the party until late 2027, rejecting the traditional single leadership model favored by Corbyn.

Concluding the conference, Corbyn announced the members’ vote on the party’s official name, with “Your Party” being chosen as the official name. He emphasized the party’s rules, constitution, enthusiasm, commitment, principles, and, most importantly, its name.

Corbyn reiterated the importance of unity as the party moves forward with a new leadership model, calling on delegates to work together and understand the significant impact their actions have on people across the country. The reception of this call for unity remains to be seen as the party navigates its unique leadership structure.
