A Braintree couple, Terrence and Lesley Bridges, have successfully reduced their monthly heating costs to £40 by participating in a new energy scheme trial. They replaced their gas boiler with a data center containing over 500 computer banks, generating heat that is transferred to their hot water system. Previously, they were spending £375 per month to heat their two-bedroom bungalow, but now their bills have decreased to between £40 and £70 since installing the data center in December 2024.

Terrence, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed relief at no longer worrying about heating costs, especially since his wife suffers from spinal stenosis. The innovative HeatHub data center, developed by Thermify as part of UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project, aims to help low-income households transition to net zero energy consumption. The Bridges also have solar panels on their roof, further contributing to energy efficiency.

The data center, located in their shed, ensures uniform warmth throughout their bungalow, eliminating cold spots. Terrence has been impressed by the system’s performance and recommends it to others. Thermify’s CEO, Travis Theune, highlighted the company’s mission to combat fuel poverty in the UK by offering clean and affordable energy solutions.

Eastlight Community Homes’ Daniel Greenwood commended the SHIELD project’s efforts to make homes more energy-efficient and cost-effective for residents. The successful trial at the Bridges’ home showcases significant carbon reductions and cost savings, prompting plans to expand the initiative to more households. UK Power Networks aims to scale up this project to benefit 100,000 units annually by 2030, ensuring that all households can access greener technologies for a sustainable future.
