The National Health Service (NHS) advises individuals experiencing certain symptoms to remain at home until at least two days after the symptoms have ceased, as they may be infected with the highly transmissible stomach bug Norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, which can cause significant discomfort.

Typically, the illness subsides within a 48-hour period, with the NHS emphasizing that self-treatment at home is often the most effective approach. Recommendations include frequent handwashing to prevent spread, adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration, and sufficient rest.

According to NHS information, Norovirus is a stomach bug characterized by diarrhea and vomiting, generally resolving within about two days. While self-care at home is usually sufficient, the key advice is to rest and maintain proper hydration. Those affected can consider using paracetamol for relief, with parents urged to review medication instructions before administering it to children.

Given the highly contagious nature of Norovirus, individuals are advised to refrain from attending school, nursery, or work until they have been symptom-free for 48 hours. It is also advisable to avoid hospitals and care homes until the same symptom-free period has passed.

Symptoms of Norovirus, such as sudden onset of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, may be accompanied by high fever, headaches, abdominal discomfort, and general body aches.

The NHS cautions individuals with diarrhea to steer clear of fruit juices and carbonated beverages, as these can exacerbate symptoms. Since diarrhea and vomiting lead to increased fluid loss, it is crucial to prevent dehydration by replenishing lost fluids.

Signs of dehydration include symptoms such as thirst, dry mouth, dark urine, dizziness, and fatigue.
