A recent study conducted by the Autonomy Institute revealed that approximately four out of five young individuals in the United Kingdom have engaged with artificial intelligence companions. The research highlighted that nearly 10% of these users have had intimate or sexual interactions with these virtual companions. These AI companions are designed with human-like avatars, customizable personalities, and the ability to retain long-term memory.

According to the study, 79% of young people surveyed have utilized AI companions, with around half of them being regular users who interact with the companions multiple times per week. Among these users, 40% sought emotional advice or therapeutic support through these AI companions, while 9% reported engaging in intimate or sexual interactions.

Despite the high usage rate, only 24% of respondents expressed a high level of trust in these AI companions. The study also found that 31% of young individuals have shared personal information with their AI companions despite concerns about privacy.

The Autonomy Institute emphasized that AI companions are seen as always available, non-judgmental, and a low-pressure way for young people to seek advice, practice social skills, and explore emotions. The primary motivations for using these companions were curiosity and entertainment, although a segment of users relied on them for emotional support.

The study also raised concerns about manipulative design patterns, privacy violations, and risks of self-harm and suicide associated with AI chatbots. The Autonomy Institute is advocating for new regulations to address these issues, including prohibiting access to intimate or sexualized AI companions for minors and implementing intervention protocols for self-harm and suicide prevention.

Furthermore, the Autonomy Institute called for stronger privacy protections to prevent the sale of sensitive user data and to ban manipulative design features that exploit emotional dependency. The Technology Secretary, Liz Kendall, acknowledged the gaps in legislation regarding AI chatbots and expressed a willingness to introduce new laws to ensure their regulation.

Lead author of the study, James Muldoon, warned about the potential exploitation and harm that could result from the unregulated use of AI companions. A DSIT spokesperson emphasized the importance of ensuring that existing regulations under the Online Safety Act cover AI services, including chatbots, to protect users from harmful content.

In conclusion, the study underscores the growing influence of AI companions in the emotional lives of young individuals and the necessity for comprehensive regulations to safeguard users and prevent potential harm.
