In our society, the normalization of children growing up in cramped quarters, having meals on a bed due to lack of a table, and sharing facilities with strangers has become all too common. This situation, often labeled a housing crisis, is not a sudden occurrence but a longstanding failure that has been allowed to persist.

Having personally witnessed these living conditions, with families enduring mold, constant leaks, lack of furniture, and children feeling ashamed to invite friends over, the question arises: How did we allow it to reach this level of severity?

It is insufficient to attribute the problem to a stretched system, councils, or government budgets. Behind every excuse lies a child spending Christmas in unsuitable accommodations like converted offices, bed and breakfasts, and temporary flats that are far from temporary.

To address this issue, the “172,000 Reasons to Give” GoFundMe campaign was launched, aiming to ensure that children facing homelessness are not forgotten during the festive season. Contributions go directly to families in need through gift cards, allowing parents to select meaningful gifts for their children without delays or bureaucratic processes.

Collaborating with schools in high homelessness areas, the campaign aims to provide support where it is most needed. A donation as small as £30 can make a significant difference to a child living in temporary housing, conveying a message of care and inclusion during the holidays.

More than just distributing gifts, this initiative challenges the normalization of unacceptable living conditions and emphasizes the importance of acknowledging every child’s worth. By either donating or sharing the campaign, individuals can actively make a positive impact and help address the urgent needs of these vulnerable children.

For those interested in supporting the cause, you can contribute to or spread awareness about the campaign. While there may be 172,000 reasons prompting action, it only takes one individual to make a difference.
