The Davis Cup final is set for Sunday, featuring Spain against Italy in a highly anticipated showdown. The competition faced controversy earlier this year due to an altercation between Zizou Bergs and Cristian Garin during the tournament’s qualifying round in February.

The incident occurred when Bergs, representing Belgium, knocked Garin of Chile to the ground while celebrating a break of serve. Following this, Garin refused to continue the match despite being examined by a doctor, resulting in penalties against him and ultimately awarding Belgium the victory.

Garin expressed disappointment over the decision not to end the match, especially after Bergs took a lead in the third set. The clash between the players happened as Bergs celebrated his break and accidentally collided with Garin, leading to the latter being checked by a doctor but refusing to resume play.

The International Tennis Federation confirmed that Garin was cleared to continue playing but chose not to. Garin received penalties, giving Belgium a 3-1 win. The ITF statement defended the decision, citing adherence to rules and procedures.

In response, Garin posted a photo on Instagram showing what appeared to be a black eye and criticized the ITF’s handling of the situation. He expressed disbelief over his disqualification and the pressure to continue despite feeling dizzy after an intense match.

Bergs faced a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct, with the umpire labeling the incident as an “unfortunate accident.” Bergs explained that his actions were unintentional, expressing regret and apologizing to Garin and his team.

The match concluded with apologies exchanged between the players, acknowledging the unintended consequences of the incident.
