Lidl has introduced a new self-scanning feature to its loyalty app, aiming to streamline the checkout process for customers. Shoppers now have the option to scan items using their mobile phones before finalizing their purchases at the register. Initially tested in a limited “friends and family” trial across four stores earlier this year, the company plans to roll out this functionality more widely in the coming year.

The supermarket chain has also applied for a trademark in both Europe and the UK for “Lidl & Go,” focusing on digital payment and scan-and-shop systems within its stores. Shyam Unarket, Customer Relations Director at Lidl GB, emphasized that integrating payment capabilities into the Lidl Plus app signifies a significant advancement in their digital strategy. The goal is to invest in technology that simplifies the shopping experience and provides customers with greater flexibility in their interactions with the brand.

In related news, Lidl has been recognized as the most affordable supermarket by Which? for the second time recently, surpassing its competitor Aldi. According to Which?’s analysis, a shopping basket comprising 70 items at Lidl averaged £120.46 in October, or £120.38 for Lidl Plus members, while a similar basket at Aldi cost £121 on average. The list included both branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For comparison, Tesco shoppers would have spent £134.89 last month, or £133.38 with a Clubcard, while Sainsbury’s totalled £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card. Notably, Aldi and Lidl were excluded from the pricing analysis of a longer list of 187 items due to their smaller product range compared to other supermarkets.

This move from Lidl to enhance convenience through digital innovations while maintaining affordability in the market reflects a strategic approach to meet customer needs and preferences effectively.
