Tourists enjoying a scenic beach were shocked to discover a gruesome scene where five human heads were found hanging, believed to be a warning message from a criminal organization, as per law enforcement authorities. The heads were spotted on a popular beach in Puerto Lopez, Ecuador, suspended from ropes attached to wooden poles. Photos released by local media outlets indicate a surge of drug-related violence in the region.

Adjacent to the disturbing sight was a written threat aimed at potential competitors contemplating extortion activities against fishermen in the nearby port of Puerto Lopez. These fishermen are reportedly exploited by transnational drug cartels operating in the area. A region-wide conflict over territorial dominance of drug-trafficking routes has led to a series of violent episodes, prompting heightened police presence and surveillance in Puerto Lopez.

The province of Manabi, home to Puerto Lopez, has witnessed increased law enforcement measures following recent deadly incidents. Despite these efforts, the escalation of violence persists, with official records indicating 9,000 homicides in Ecuador in 2025. The country has experienced a rise in gang-related violence, exemplified by recent attacks such as the shooting at a pool hall in Santo Domingo that claimed five lives.

Moreover, Mario Pineida, a 33-year-old former Ecuadorian football player, fell victim to a fatal armed assault in Guayaquil. Ecuador’s strategic location has made it a focal point for drug trafficking activities, particularly through its borders with Colombia and Peru. The UK’s foreign office has issued travel advisories for specific regions, including Manabi and coastal areas, urging caution due to internal unrest and armed conflicts.

Ecuador declared a 60-day state of emergency, citing ongoing disturbances and violence. The state of emergency covers several provinces, including Guayas, El Oro, and Pichincha. While tourists are not typically targeted in coastal regions, the Foreign Office warns of potential risks due to mistaken identity or involvement in security incidents. Travelers near the Ecuador-Colombia border are advised to remain vigilant, travel during daylight hours with official guides, and have contingency plans in place.

The Foreign Office cautions against “express kidnapping” in certain areas, where individuals are briefly abducted for ransom. Travelers are advised to stay alert, follow local guidance, and maintain communication systems when traveling near the border.
