Lidl has once again been named the most budget-friendly supermarket by Which?, surpassing Aldi for the second time in recent months.
In October, a shopping list containing 70 items at Lidl averaged £120.46, or £120.38 for members of the Lidl Plus loyalty program. The same basket at Aldi cost an average of £121. This marks the 22nd occasion in the last 24 months that Aldi has been recognized as the cheapest supermarket by Which?.
The comparison included a mix of branded and own-brand products like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter. For Tesco customers, the total bill would have been £134.89 in the previous month, or £133.38 with a Clubcard. Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s shoppers would have paid £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card.
Which? also evaluates prices for a longer list of 187 items, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their smaller product range compared to other supermarkets. Asda emerged as the most cost-effective option for a larger shopping list, costing £469.11. The same items would have totaled £476.11 for Tesco Clubcard holders and £481.34 for Morrisons’ More loyalty card members.
Waitrose stood out as the priciest option for both smaller and larger shopping lists. The analysis takes into account special offer prices and loyalty discounts where applicable, excluding multi-buy deals.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, highlighted Lidl’s consistent affordability and Asda’s competitive pricing. With concerns over rising food prices, shoppers are advised to compare prices across supermarkets to potentially save up to 26%.
