An ordinary-looking grandmother shocked the world with her deceptive facade by committing a cold-blooded murder of her husband and then killing another woman to assume her identity.

Lois Ann Riess, known as the “Killer Grandma” by the media, triggered a nationwide manhunt in 2018 after disappearing from her Minnesota home following the discovery of her husband’s body with multiple gunshot wounds.

Authorities identified Lois as the main suspect, uncovering evidence that she had forged her husband’s signature, emptied his accounts, and fled south to sustain a life on the run driven by a long-standing gambling addiction.

Upon arriving in Fort Myers Beach, Riess befriended Pamela Hutchinson, a woman resembling her in age, physique, and hairstyle, with the intention of stealing her identity.

Tragically, Hutchinson was found shot dead in her vacation condo days later, with Riess absconding with Hutchinson’s personal belongings to evade law enforcement across multiple states.

Florida investigators described the crimes as methodical and heartless, highlighting the contrast between Riess’ outward appearance and her heinous actions.

After a public tip-off, Riess was apprehended by US Marshals at a Texas restaurant, ending her brazen escapade that spanned various illicit activities. Subsequently, she pleaded guilty to both murders.

In separate court proceedings, Riess confessed to killing Pamela Hutchinson in Florida and stealing her identity, resulting in a life sentence without parole. She was then extradited to Minnesota, where she admitted to murdering her husband and received an additional life sentence.

During the legal proceedings, Riess’ children delivered emotional victim impact statements, expressing their profound sense of loss and betrayal due to their mother’s actions.

In a recent HBO documentary, Riess attributed her crimes to a “psychotic break” stemming from years of gambling addiction, financial turmoil, and mental health difficulties, a claim met with skepticism by those involved in the case.
