During a birthday trip to the Maldives, Gina Donner, 26, initially thought she had the flu but later discovered she had contracted dengue fever, a dangerous tropical disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Despite being misdiagnosed in Dubai, Gina’s health deteriorated upon returning to Germany, leading to a correct diagnosis of dengue. The illness left her hospitalized for 10 days and severely weakened, impacting her ability to walk and causing ongoing weakness and exhaustion even 18 months later.

Gina recalled the trip starting on a positive note with beautiful views and activities, but the weather changed, and she began experiencing joint pain and redness. Feeling extremely ill in Dubai, she was initially tested for dengue with negative results but later confirmed to have the disease back in Germany.

After her hospital stay, Gina struggled with regaining her strength, taking weeks to walk independently. Despite the challenges, she remains optimistic about her recovery, exploring natural remedies like herbal cleanses and coconut water based on advice from those familiar with dengue-prone regions.

Reflecting on her experience, Gina emphasized the importance of protecting oneself from mosquitoes, advising future travelers to the Maldives to use bug spray and nets to prevent similar health complications.
