Toto Wolff is reportedly in talks to sell a portion of his ownership in the Mercedes Formula 1 team. Wolff, who currently holds a 33 percent stake in the team and serves as its chief executive and team principal, is said to be in advanced negotiations to sell between five and 10 percent of the team to an external investor. If the deal goes through, it could value the F1 team at approximately £4.5 billion, potentially resulting in a substantial nine-figure payout for Wolff.

Despite the potential ownership restructuring, Wolff is expected to retain all his current responsibilities within the team. A spokesperson for Mercedes confirmed that the team’s governance will remain unchanged. However, the spokesperson declined to comment on the specifics of the proposed ownership change, which currently divides ownership equally among Wolff, the Mercedes-Benz Group, and INEOS, a petrochemicals company owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The reported deal, which was first disclosed by Sportico, would set a new record valuation for an F1 team. For instance, McLaren, the winner of consecutive constructors’ titles in recent seasons, was valued at over £3 billion when Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat acquired full ownership of the team in partnership with Emirati investment group CYVN Holdings.

The increased value of F1 teams in recent years can be attributed to the sport’s growing global audience. The popular Netflix series “Formula 1: Drive to Survive,” which gained immense popularity during the initial Covid lockdown in 2020, is credited with attracting new viewers, particularly in the USA. This surge in interest has led to the addition of three races per year in the country, hosted in Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas.

Sky has enhanced its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle by including additional streaming services like HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+, and Hayu, alongside 135 channels and comprehensive coverage of Formula 1 events. Sky offers exclusive broadcasting of all practice sessions, qualifying rounds, and races throughout the season, as well as coverage of other sports such as the Premier League, EFL, darts, and golf.

In January 2022, INEOS acquired a one-third stake in the Mercedes F1 team for approximately £200 million. If Wolff’s proposed sale goes through at the reported valuation, it would represent a remarkable 650 percent increase in just under four years. Additionally, other less successful F1 teams have also seen increased interest, with reports of offers exceeding £1 billion for teams such as Haas, indicating the overall rise in the sport’s appeal and financial value.
