According to recent findings by Scottish Widows, more than half (51%) of individuals now possess multiple workplace pension funds.

Approximately 9% of people are unaware of the exact number of workplace pension pots they hold, and 23% intend to merge their pension pots but are unsure about the process.

A music teacher named Michael Bryans, 38, residing in Dumfries, Scotland, was surprised by the amount in his retirement pots when he was prompted to consolidate his pensions after changing jobs.

Having discovered two pension pots, one valued at £20,768 and the other at £412, Michael advises others to proactively consider their retirement plans at an earlier stage.

Statistics from the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) reveal that around £31.1 billion is idle in unclaimed, inactive, or misplaced pensions, with an average pot size of £9,469.

Reflecting on his experience, Michael shared, “About two years ago, I changed jobs and was informed about the option to consolidate some of my pensions, which initiated the process.”

“It was somewhat challenging. Each pension fund had its own procedures and methods, and there was no universal approach. I merged three different pensions, each with distinct requirements,” he added.

He emphasized the importance of persistence and prioritizing pension consolidation sooner rather than later.

Before consolidating pension pots, it is advisable to seek independent financial advice. Consolidation streamlines administrative tasks by centralizing all pensions, but individuals should compare charges and potential exit fees with their current pension schemes.

Consideration should also be given to any benefits or perks in existing pensions that may be forfeited, such as guaranteed annuity rates.

Michael is actively tracing additional pension pots from his past part-time work and has initiated a private pension to supplement his retirement savings.

The Pension Tracing Service offers a database search of over 200,000 workplace and personal pension schemes, providing contact details of providers for further inquiry regarding potential funds.

Alternatively, individuals can contact their employers for pertinent pension details. Pension Wise, a government service, offers free pension guidance and advice.
