It has been a challenging week for the Government as internal issues have taken center stage. A controversy surrounding Keir Starmer’s leadership led to unintended consequences, overshadowing discussions on the Prime Minister’s standing. The spotlight once again turned towards Downing Street operations and Chief of Staff Morgan McSweeney amidst the turmoil.

Adding to the turmoil, a leak regarding Rachel Reeves’s Budget proposals caused fluctuations in borrowing costs and the pound’s value. However, subsequent reports from Treasury insiders provided a more optimistic outlook than initially feared. The infighting within the Labour Party escalated, particularly targeting Health Secretary Wes Streeting, accused of orchestrating a coup, much to the dismay of Labour MPs concerned about the party’s poll ratings.

Despite the chaos, Health Secretary Streeting’s handling of media challenges, along with his witty response to detractors, garnered positive feedback. Critics highlighted that such internal conflicts distract from essential issues, such as countering Nigel Farage’s Reform agenda. Keir Starmer received praise for his strong stance against Reform during a recent Labour conference speech, although some MPs expressed frustration over the ongoing internal strife.

Efforts to contain the fallout saw Starmer publicly apologizing to Streeting and condemning the unacceptable behavior during a parliamentary session. While No10 denied involvement in the negative briefings against Streeting, suspicions lingered among some MPs. The focus then shifted to the Treasury following reports of abandoning plans to raise income tax in the upcoming Budget, calming market concerns with better-than-expected forecasts.

MPs welcomed the retention of manifesto commitments, emphasizing the availability of progressive revenue-raising alternatives. However, this sudden change introduced fresh uncertainties ahead of the critical Budget announcement, which could significantly impact both the Chancellor and the Government’s standing.
